ECONOMIC SOCIOLOGY

(OIK136) -  TSAOUSI ASPASIA

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

The main objective of this course is to introduce undergraduate Erasmus students to the field of Economic Sociology, which applies sociological approaches to explain different economic phenomena. Over the past twenty years, the dialogue between sociologists and economists has intensified, as more economists have started to recognize the impact of social factors like culture, social norms, networks, institutions like the family, etc. The course will place emphasis on New Economic Sociology and the developments in the field since 1985. It will address the fundamental theoretical foundations of mainstream New Economic Sociology: organization theory, network theory and the theory of culture. It will familiarize the students with the key figures in the field—the founding fathers (Max Weber, Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Karl Polanyi, Georg Simmel) and the contemporary protagonists (Mark Granovetter, Richard Swedberg, Viviana Zelizer, Harrison White). It will also look into other related fields that have restructured the relation between economics and sociology: rational choice sociology, new home economics and the work of Nobel laureate Gary Becker, new institutional economics, and behavioral economics.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
