Advanced Financial Accounting and Analysis
(ODE444) - Emmanouil Dedoulis
Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
Designed to cover the particular needs of MBA students, this Advance Course in Financial Accounting and Analysis adopts a primarily user rather than a preparer perspective and it is divided into parts. The first part, comprising of 6 lectures and taught by E. Dedoulis, aims at extending students' knowledge on a number of current accounting issues and practices with a view to provide deeper understandings of how key financial statement figures are produced. The second part of the course, comprising of 7 lectures and taught by G. Papanastasopoulos, integrates standard financial statement analysis and fundamentals analysis. In this respect, accounting figures are analysed from an economics / finance point of view. Such an analysis is required for decision making in a global economic environment. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to understand the content of corporate financial statements and perform in depth analysis thereon, in order to make informed investment, financing or business decisions.
Prior knowledge of financial accounting and analysis is required as the class focuses on advanced accounting topics and substantive issues of analysis and interpretation.
Teaching Delivery
There is a three-hour lecture each week (Wednesday, 09.00 – 12.00) and teaching lasts for thirteen weeks. For the classes, you may be sub-divided into smaller groups and each group required to make a presentation to the class on a case study and lead discussion thereon. Assignments for each lecture, Power Point (PP) slides and other material will be distributed to students via e-mail. So, please check that you have provided the course secretary with a valid e-mail address.
Assessment
The course will be assessed by means of continuous assessment during the course and a final end-of-course written examination (3 hours).
Some advice
- Read the recommended chapters from the main textbook, and certainly the PP slides, before each lecture, and always do the self-study problem of each chapter.
- Form a study group with your friends and discuss and debate the readings before coming to class. Group work will help you increase your knowledge on each subject, develop inter-personal skills, gain knowledge of yourself an also encourage reflections on your own abilities.
- As the course progresses, summarise the reading material and underline the key points. This would be an invaluable assistance for revision.
- Try to do all self-study problems in each chapter and all exercises and problems assigned by the lecturers.
