Διαδραστικός Σχεδιασμός και Πολυμέσα (Interaction Design and Multimedia) [ΨΜΑΕ]
(INF422) - Andreas A. Vasilakis
Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
Making interactive digital applications is a creative and technical art form. This graduate level course introduces the students simple tools and practices for effectively designing, development and publishing immersive virtual applications and provides the theoretical foundations and practical aspects of digital image synthesis, interactive multimedia design, and computer game mechanisms. The aim of this course is to learn students design and create an interactive, authentic, and complex experience from scratch by getting familiar with industry-standard game development tools, such as the Unity3D game engine.

Course Objectives/Goals
The course aims to introduce:
- Basic theoretical concepts of the digital image synthesis, interactive multimedia, and computer game design mechanisms.
- Simple tools and procedures for effectively designing, development and publishing interactive digital applications via Unity game engine.
By the end of the course, student will be able to:
-
Design and prototype interactive digital experiences. Develop and implement functional Unity applications.
-
Apply fundamental principles of interaction, immersion, and multimedia design.
-
Critically evaluate usability and user experience.
-
Communicate design and technical decisions through presentations.
Assessment Methods
The course assessment is based entirely (100% – 10/10) on the design, development, and presentation of a Unity project.
The project consists of an interactive, immersive, multimedia application developed using Unity.General Information
-
The project is mandatory.
-
All assignments are carried out in groups of 2–3 students.
-
The project idea is proposed by the students and must be approved by the instructor.
-
Each group is required to demonstrate and document their progress through intermediate project presentations during the semester.
Project Development Phases
The project must follow the standard design and development pipeline outlined below:
-
Requirements Analysis
Definition of the project goals, target users, interaction requirements, and technical constraints. -
Conceptual & Physical Design
Development of the core idea, narrative, interaction logic, and overall user experience. Design of the virtual environment, assets, interface elements, and interaction mechanisms. -
Unity Implementation
Technical development of the project in Unity, including scene setup, scripting, interactions, multimedia integration, and functionality. -
Evaluation
Testing and assessment of usability, performance, user experience, and achievement of the initial requirements.
Final Delivery & Presentation
At the end of the semester, each group submits and presents:
-
The final Unity project.
-
Supporting documentation.
-
A live demonstration and discussion of the design and implementation choices.
An oral examination complements the final presentation and evaluates each student’s individual understanding of Unity, design decisions, and development process.
Textbooks / Indicative Bibliography
There is no single required textbook for this course. Learning is primarily based on hands-on practice, project development, and guided tutorials. Students are expected to actively explore documentation and online resources to support the design, implementation, and evaluation of their project.
