1. Brief Introduction and aims of the course
Work and Organizational Psychology is a vibrant and evolving field of applied psychology that investigates how psychological principles can be used to understand, predict, and influence human behavior in the workplace. Drawing upon theories and research methods from social sciences, it examines how employees think, feel, and act in organizational settings, and how these behaviors are shaped by both individual characteristics and the surrounding work environment. The discipline focuses not only on the employee as an individual but also on the complex interactions among colleagues, teams, and the organization as a whole. Key areas of study include perception, stereotypes, and attribution in the workplace; individual differences such as intelligence, personality, and emotional intelligence; as well as the impact of stress and attitudes on performance and well-being.
This course is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the field of Work and Organizational Psychology and to prepare students for future program modules such as Organizational Behaviour, Personal Skills Development, and Human Resource Management. Students will be introduced to major theories and models, while also engaging with practical applications through case studies and discussions. The course will cover a wide range of topics central to understanding the human side of work: diversity and learning in organizations; teamwork, group influence, and performance; job satisfaction, attitudes, and the psychological contract; and the challenges of resistance to change. By following this structured journey, students will develop both the knowledge and analytical skills to critically evaluate workplace issues and apply evidence-based insights to improve employee performance, foster collaboration, and enhance organizational effectiveness.
