Course Description
Part A. International Trade: Theory and Policy
Absolute and comparative advantage in international trade; the determination of relative prices; the gains from trade; the effects of productivity changes on domestic and foreign welfare. Gains and losses from trade in the specific-factors model; the determination of factor incomes. Increasing returns to scale, imperfect competition, and the gains from trade; dumping and reciprocal dumping. Trade policy under perfect competition; the effects of tariffs, subsidies, and quantitative restrictions. Trade policy under imperfectly competitive market structures. The political economy of trade policy. International and regional trade agreements.
Part B. International Monetary Economics: Theory and Policy
National income accounting and the balance of payments; the current account and foreign indebtedness. Money, interest rates and exchange rates; purchasing power parity; international interest-rate differences and the real exchange rate. National income and the exchange rate: the IS/LM model; Fixed versus flexible exchange rates; monetary, fiscal and exchange rate policy effectiveness under imperfect and perfect capital mobility. The insulating properties of alternative exchange rate regimes. Balance of payments crises and capital flight. The international monetary system; macroeconomic policy goals in the open economy: internal and external balance. International macroeconomic policycoordination.
