Brief Course Description:

The core objectives of this course are to develop a basic understanding of how the macroeconomy works in an international environment and how macroeconomic policy is conducted in individual economies embedded in the globalized economic system. To this end, the basic analytical tools of macroeconomics will be developed by presenting the methodology and techniques of current research in the field. This will develop the ability of students to understand technical issues and apply macroeconomic theory to real world economic policy issues, allowing them to critically evaluate both the professional literature and public policy arguments appearing in the press. Examples and case studies from the US, Europe, Japan, China and emerging market economies will be used in an integrated manner with theoretical models to enhance knowledge of the world economy.

 

The course will cover a review of international macroeconomics and analyze a number of current international macroeconomic and financial issues, policies and events, including:

·      interest rates, exchange rates and asset prices in the global economy;

·      short- and long-term effects of monetary and fiscal policy;

·      causes and consequences of trade deficits and external imbalances;

·      causes of currency, banking and financial crises in developed and emerging economies;

·      the reform the international financial architecture and the debate on IMF and World Bank reform;

·      sovereign debt and its restructuring.
