Chronological Contents: The course examines the basic parameters of globalization and economic change during the following 4 epochs:
1. Pre-industrial era, (1500-1750)
2. Industrial revolution, (1750/80-1914)
3. Short 20th century, (1914-1989)
4. Post-modern era, (1989+)
Learning outcomes of the course: At the end of the course the students should have a basic understanding of the:
1. Origins and evolution of globalization
2. Stylised facts of modern economic growth
3. National varieties in industrialization patterns
4. Rise of the West, capitalism and the business cycle
5. Historical trends in the international divisions in wealth
6.The rise of the new economic superpowers and changing conditions in the West
Syllabus: A compilation of readings will be handed out from writings of Rondo Cameron, Carlo Cippola, Daniel Cohen, John Arnold, Robert Heilbronner, Douglass North and Jurgen Osterhammel-Niles Petersson
Requirements: One optional presentation in class and a written final exam. For the M.Sc. students a long essay (10-15 pages) is required in addition.
