Το εργαστήριο Υπολογιστικών Συστημάτων - CSLab (http://www.cslab.ece.ntua.gr) της Σχολής Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών & Μηχανικών Υπολογιστών του ΕΜΠ ενδιαφέρεται για νέους ερευνητές/υποψηφίους διδάκτορες στην περιοχή των συστημάτων διαχείρισης μεγάλου όγκου δεδομένων (big data) με τεχνολογίες υπολογιστικών νεφών (cloud computing). Η έρευνα θα χρηματοδοτηθεί στο πλαίσιο ερευνητικού έργου Horizon 2020 “SELIS: Towards a Shared European Logistics Intelligent Information Space” με ημερομηνία έναρξης την 1/9/2016.

Στο εργαστήριο υπάρχει μια δραστήρια ομάδα κατανεμημένων συστημάτων που αποτελείται από ερευνητές με υπόβαθρο σε μεγάλης κλίμακας συστήματα διαχείρισης μεγάλου όγκου δεδομένων, υπολογιστικά νέφη και λειτουργικά συστήματα.

Fribourg, Switzerland has several openings for Ph.D. students starting
now. XI is new lab focusing on creating next-generation information
management infrastructures for scientific, semantic, and social data.

We are looking for highly qualified individuals with a M.Sc. in
Computer Science (or related areas). Candidates must have strong
analytical and programming skills, a good command of the English
language, and a genuine interest in designing, building and publishing
innovative approaches and systems to manage Big Data.

XI’s current endeavors include projects to build new Big Data
infrastructures to manage GPS or time series data, and to integrate
textual and scientific data through large-scale knowledge graphs. Our

Subject: A data flux comparison among different Distributed Frequents Itemset Mining Algorithms over MapReduce platform

Description: This internship subject deals with two research fields:
Data Mining and Cloud Computing.

The objective of the internship is
(1) to implement or find the source code for the following Distributed Frequents Itemset Mining Algorithms over MapReduce platform : MRApriori algorithm, IMRApriori algorithm, SPC and DPC algorithms, DPFPM algorithm, Mreclat algorithm, and Apriori-V algorithm.

(2) to compare the mining performance, the quantity of data distributed in each data node before the mining work and the quantity of data communicated among each node in the mining work among these algorithms.

(3) to develop or find the source code for a vertical data layout bitmap converter, if it is necessary, for the preparation of data sets in different experiences.

(4) to study and implement, if it's possible with the time constraint, some improvements for Apriori-V algorithm.

This internship will contribute in order to:
1. understand different waysof working of the main types of Distributed Frequents Itemset Mining Algorithms over MapReduce platform;
2. clarify the utilisations and the flux of different data types in Distributed Frequents Itemset Mining Algorithms over MapReduce platform;
3. plan our future development and improvements for our ongoing studies related to Apriori-V algorithm in this domain.

The internship is available immediately, will take place at the ETIS Lab (ENSEA / UCP / CNRS UMR 8051) located at Cergy Pontoise in the Paris area and will last for 6 months.

PhD position on Machine Learning for representation learning

We are looking for an excellent candidate who will undertake a PhD on the development of new machine learning methods for non-parametric representation learning with an emphasis on two-level instance description problems and recommendation problems.

In the standard propositional learning scenario instances are described by a fixed set of attributes, which take values from some domain. However in many applications the attributes have also their own descriptions. One of the classical examples is diagnostic problems in genomics and protemics in which individuals are described by the expression levels of sets of genes and proteins, which in their turn are described by their properties. The typical learning methods do not make use of the available side information. Similar settings appear in recommender problems in which items and users are also described by side information. The goal of the project is to develop representation learning methods that work in a two level setting, the base instance representation level and the second level that contains the side information on the attributes, to learn latent representations exploiting all the available information. To that end the applicant is expected to build on our expertise on metric and kernel learning, [2], [3], as well as to explore the use of deep learning methods, [1].

The position is partially funded by a Swiss National Science Foundation international collaboration project as well as other sources for a period of three years. The first year brut salary is 47000CHF (the standard SNSF funding rate for doctorate studens). There will be a possibility to completement the above amount, for that knowledge of French would be a plus.

The successful candidate will join the data mining and machine learning team of the University of Applied Sciences, Western Switzerland, led by Prof. Alexandros Kalousis, and will enroll as a PhD student at the Computer Science department of the University of Geneva within the VIPER group led by Prof. Stephane Marchand-Maillet. Our research explores a number of different issues such as: learning in high dimensional settings, dimensionality reduction and feature selection, learning with structured data (multiple kernel learning), metric and similarity learning, the exploitation of domain knowledge in the learning process. The greater Geneva lake area is a world-renowned education and research hub, including not only the University of Geneva, but also EPFL, and IDIAP. It offers considerable opportunities for training and exposure to data mining and machine learning, with a number of research teams being active on these and related fields. In addition the selected candidate will have ample opportunities to participate in the main ML and DM conferences.

The ideal candidate will have:

A very solid background in a combination of mathematics and computer science. Special areas of interest include: statistical machine learning, statistics, mathematical optimization, mathematical modelling.
He or she should have completed, or about to complete, an MSc in the above areas.
A very good understanding of machine learning methods and algorithms; project experience in the area will be a considerable plus.
Solid expertise in at least one of Matlab or R.
Strong programming skills in scripting languages, such as perl, python, etc.
Excellent command of English.
Team work capacity.

GeoSemantic Technologies for Archaeology Resources

in the Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at University of Glamorgan, UK.

This PhD research project will investigate the integration of spatial and semantic information in the archaeology domain. The successful candidate will work with the Hypermedia and GIS Research Units at the University of Glamorgan. The supervisory research team includes Douglas Tudhope (dstudhope@glam.ac.uk), Mark Ware (jmware@glam.ac.uk) and Alex Lohfink (alohfink@glam.ac.uk).

This work will build on the AHRC funded STAR (http://hypermedia.research.glam.ac.uk/kos/star/) and STELLAR (http://hypermedia.research.glam.ac.uk/kos/stellar/) projects at Glamorgan, which made significant advances in semantic tools and techniques but where spatial data were out of scope. The spatial dimension is a key aspect of digital archaeology. It is anticipated that the research will involve collaboration with various organisations, including the Archaeology Data Service at the University of York, English Heritage, Ordnance Survey.

The research team has an excellent track record in the application of semantic technologies to digital archaeology research. This involves mapping and extracting excavation data to ontologies, such as the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model and Knowledge Organization Systems, such as thesauri and glossaries for Monument and Find types. However the integration of the spatial and semantic dimensions remains a key challenge.

Recently work has begun to address this problem, including proposed extensions to the semantic web language SPARQL and spatial extensions to ontologies such as the CIDOC CRM. Various standards based approaches have been proposed by the Open Geospatial Consortium, including the OGC standard semantic language GeoSPARQL. Efforts are underway to consider the appropriate spatial extension to the CIDOC CRM ontology and in particular a GeoSPARQL extension. The PhD work will seek to investigate approaches for modelling the integration of spatial and semantic archaeological data, investigating the potential of GeoSPARQL and other approaches.

Applicants should have significant software development skills/experience. Knowledge of semantic technologies and GIS will be an advantage but is not necessary. Funding is £15,000 per year available up to 3 years of study, which is not inclusive of fees.

for combined PhD researcher position at Eindhoven University of Technology and Stoneroos BV.

We offer a 4-year full-time PhD research position in the field of Adaptive Hypermedia and User Modeling at the department of Computer Science, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), the Netherlands.
The candidate will be enrolled in FP7 research project EURECA: Enabling information re-Use by linking clinical REsearch and Care (http://eurecaproject.eu/) that studies linkage of healthcare information residing in electronic health record systems with information in clinical research information systems, such as clinical trials.

The Dutch company Stoneroos BV (http://www.stoneroos.nl/en) is teaming up with TU/e to contribute to the semantic interoperability and data mining research aspects in this project in order to design a personalized information source for patients (and patient groups). Stoneroos is an innovative company, sprouted from the TV-domain, which focuses on products like iTV applications, second screen apps, metadata enrichment, etc., bringing cutting-edge technologies like semantic Web technology in the area of personalization to the real world, resulting e.g. in the iFanzy personalized TV recommender system. TU/e has guided that research in the past and has extensive experience in data mining and personalization.

RESEARCH PROJECT AND TASK DESCRIPTION
In the EURECA project 18 partners from 8 countries work together to offer better information to both patients and specialists, using many ICT techniques such as information system architecture, semantic interoperability, data mining and knowledge discovery.

The successful candidate will focus on a set of tasks aiming to integrate state-of-the-art and yet to be invented techniques in personalization, user modeling, semantic interoperability and data-driven intelligence for developing personalized/adaptive information services for different groups of patients and medical professionals.
It is expected that the PhD candidate will be involved in the complete R&D cycles including theory/framework building, implementation of the software prototypes, experimentation with real data and evaluations/user studies.

PROFILE
We are looking for highly motivated applicants with a Master degree in Computer Science or other related disciplines. You are expected to have good knowledge and at least some experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Personalization and user modeling,
- Semantic interoperability,
- Data mining, recommender systems, information retrieval.
Successful candidates are expected to posses
- Good analytical and software development skills,
- Good command of spoken and written English,
- Good communication skills and willingness to collaborate with other researchers and developers having diverse background,
- Experience with writing research papers and technical reports is a plus, but not mandatory,
- Basic knowledge of medical informatics and clinical research is a plus, but not mandatory.

CONDITION
Stoneroos is offering a position as researcher and software developer in the EURECA project. The assignment involves a full-time position for 4 years.
The candidate is expected to prepare and defend a PhD at TU/e within these 4 years.

As researcher/developer you will be staying on average 3 to 4 days a week at Stoneroos and 1 to 2 days at the TU/e for guidance in the PhD process and further collaboration with the TU/e researchers, mainly prof. dr. Paul De Bra, dr. Mykola Pechenizkiy and dr. George Fletcher.

Background:

The Bioinformatics Laboratory (BIL) is a recent laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science at the Foundation for Research and Technology, Hellas, founded in 2011. BIL is also affiliated with the Computer Science Department of the University of Crete. BIL has recently secured funding in competitive and exciting EU research grants and is looking to expand by hiring ambitious, energetic, intelligent, and hard-working individuals to lead the development of novel causal discovery and machine learning methods, particularly for bioinformatics and computational biology problems, as well as innovative application of bioinformatics to biological data. BIL members have pioneered state-of-the-art methods for variable selection, for learning causal models, and most recently for Integrative Causal Analysis, a new approach to learning from multiple and heterogeneous datasets. Overall, FORTH is ranked first among Greek research institutions in number of citations and 12^th among European research institutions in EU FP7 funded-project participations.

Positions Available:

We are soliciting interest for several positions at the following levels: (a) Researcher - Level C (equivalent to Assistant Professor level), (b) Post Doctorate, (c) Research Staff (masters level)

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities for all positions include the development of computer code, the analysis of biological data, the development of novel algorithms, participating or leading the writing of project deliverables and scientific papers. For positions (a) and (b) active participation in proposal writing and management is also required. In addition, participation in the laboratory’s educational activities is also desired (e.g., supervising M.Sc. students, presenting tutorials, etc.).

Requirements:

A degree (Ph.D. or M.Sc. depending on the position) is required in the fields of bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, data mining, statistics, biostatistics, applied mathematics, operations research, or related fields. Basic biological, bioinformatics and machine learning skills are also required, along with a strong mathematical background. A proven research record in one of the above fields is a prerequisite.

Preferences:

We offer a funded PhD position in Computer Science at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, Ghent University, Belgium. The candidate will carry out his/her research in the context of a project on personalizing advertisements based on user generated content, in close cooperation with the Department of Computer Science, KU Leuven, Belgium. In addition to the PhD grant (4 years), funding is available for participation in international conferences, schools and workshops.

Applicants should have a master\'s degree and a strong background in computer science. Of particular interest are candidates with experience in the areas of machine learning, information retrieval, natural language processing, artificial intelligence and/or uncertainty reasoning. Extensive prior knowledge on the topic of the project is not required, but excellent (honors-level) results in prior studies are a must. The candidate is fluent in spoken and written English.

new REST service on RDF extraction from Microdata

Microdata 2 RDF Extractor

getSchema\'s Microdata extractor is a REST web service to extract RDF [1] data from Microdata [2] annotations and provide the semantic information as N-Triples [5] , N3 [3] and JSON [4]. This service conforms with the Microdata2RDF specification [11] at W3C, but the generation algorithm may be different from the one proposed by the specification. This service is powered by node.js [9] and is using the jsdom [10] library.

The service endpoint is http://getschema.org/microdataextractor

API Parameters

The following parameters are required:

url: The URL of the page containing Microdata annotations. If its value is not a valid URL or the URL does not locate a resource then the service will return an error.
out: A parameter specifying the type of desired output. The allowed values are rdf, n3 and json . Any other value is treated as invalid and the service will return an error.

When missing any of the parameters the service will return an error.

The service allows only GET requests. Any other request type will return an error.

1. Requests

Requests sent to the API endpoint must be HTTP GET requests, with all arguments sent as query parameters. All arguments must be url-encoded (as per RFC 3986, [7])

out: A parameter specifying the type of desired output. The allowed values are rdf, n3 and json . Any other value is treated as invalid and the service will return an error.

2. Responses

Consider the following HTML example and find below various possible service responses.

The out parameter will be changed accourding to the desired output format.

2.1 N-Triples Response

An N-Triples [5] response is sent when the out parameter set to rdf (out=rdf). The headers use the Content-type text/plain.

A N3 response is sent when the out parameter set to n3 (out=n3). The headers use the Content-type text/n3 .

2.3 JSON Response

A JSON response is sent when setting the out parameter to json (out=json). The response format follows Talis RDF-JSON [6]. It is a well formed JSON delivered using the Content-type application/json.

3. Errors

All service errors are delivered using JSON format. The following kinds of errors may occur:

Service Unavailable: When the service may be unfortunately down:; 503 - Service Temporarily Unavailable
Missing parameters or validation errors: When one of the required parameters is not defined (missing url or out) or does not comply to the expected format.; 409 - Conflict
Url not reachable: When the URL does not identify a physical resource.; 502 - Bad Gateway

4. Limitations

Scripts and Iframes are not loaded.

There might be other limitations regarding the triple extraction such as duplicates since we are still in beta.

While itemid is supported,itemref is not.

The property schema:additionalType is not processed and multiple item types for the same itemscope are not yet supported too.

στα έγγραφα του μαθήματος στον κατάλογο thesis υπάρχει το αρχείο thesis.pdf στο οποίο περιγράφεται μια μεταπτυχιακή διπλωματική εργασία. Η εργασία στοχεύει στην σημασιολογική επισημείωση (semantic annotation) μιας βιβλιογραφίας που αφορά στην αξιολόγηση ψηφιακών βιβλιοθηκών με τις κλάσεις της οντολογίας DiLEO (http://www.ionio.gr/labs/dbis/gr/dileo.html).

Θα εξετάσουμε και θα πειραματιστούμε με 3-4 σχετικά εργαλεία και θα τα αξιολογήσουμε πάνω σε βιβλιογραφικούς πόρους.

The Semantic Web is characterized by the existence of a very large number of distributed semantic resources, which together define a network of ontologies. After an introduction, in its second part the authors describe the NeOn Methodology framework. The book’s third part details the key activities relevant to the ontology engineering life cycle. Lastly, case studies from the pharmaceutical and the fishery domain round out the work.

The book primarily addresses two main audiences: students (and their lecturers) who need a textbook for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on ontology engineering, and practitioners who need to develop ontologies in particular or Semantic Web-based applications in general. Its educational value is maximized by its structured approach to explaining guidelines and combining them with case studies and numerous examples. The description of the open source NeOn Toolkit provides an additional asset, as it allows readers to easily evaluate and apply the ideas presented.
